We clean from early March to early May and the schedule fills up fast!!!
The pond cleaning process allows us clean out all the filters and filter material, check the motor(s), trim back plants (or even divide your aquatic plants), remove debris from the pond bottom, and have us give an overall assessment of your pond.
We feel the Full Pond Cleaning is most beneficial for you because in this situation a true Pond Professional (one that has cleaned and serviced over a thousand ponds) is actually doing the cleaning, and analyzing the pond at the same time. We then give our recommendations to you. This is incredibly valuable information!!!
First, with the use of a screened submersible pump and discharge hose we start draining the pond down. Several hundred gallons of the pond water are pumped into a holding tub which will temporarily house any aquatic life (fish & critters) we take out of the pond. The rest of the pond water is pumped out and away from the pond. Most often we discharge it into the lawn or landscaping (pond water has great nutrients for grass & plants). While the water is still pumping out we use it to flush out filter mats and filter material. The muck from the filters is also great fertilizer for the lawn and plants. When all the filter material is cleaned the rest of the water can be used to flush out dirty sections of the pond. A second pump and discharge hose can be used for this detail. We are always cautious and move around the discharge hose several times to prevent erosion or flooding.
Once the pond is drained down to about 6" we catch all the fish and put them in our holding tub(s). After all the fish are removed we completely drain the rest of the pond.
- All the filters are cleaned (either pumped or vacuumed out)
- Under water lighting is checked (burnt bulbs are replaced)
- rocks and gravel are repositioned (as needed)
- Ion-Gen device and probe checked (if applicable)
- We will also make note of any important information about the pond for the home owner.
After the pond is all cleaned up it's time to pump the saved water back into the pond. We also begin to add new water with the garden hose. Dechlorinator is added at this time.
When the pond has enough water for the fish to swim around comfortably we put the fish back in.
On all cleanings we coordinate with the home owner(s) the details on filling and starting up the pond (as some ponds can take quite some time to fill back up).
A Spring Pond Cleaning is a great jump start for the upcoming season, and a little cleaning will certainly go a long way. It will definitely help you enjoy your pond a lot more!
Put's Ponds & Gardens also cleans Pondless Waterfalls and Fountains.
